About the film

Soft follows three adolescent queer friends who become enraptured in the Toronto nightlife scene over their summer break. The feature, written and directed by Joseph Amenta, follows Julien, Otis, and Tony on an odyssey through the city. As they seek a sense of belonging, the group often finds shelter with their friend and mentor Dawn. Shot by Liam Higgins in Toronto, Soft stars Miyoko Anderson, Zion Matheson, Harlow Joy, and Matteus Lunot, as well as Krista Morin, Trevor Hayes, and Kylie May.

Joseph Amenta has directed, written, and produced numerous short films that have played festivals internationally. His recent short, HAUS, premiered Vancouver International Film Festival and was selected for Clermont Ferrand International Competition 2019. Joseph was offered the TIFF Avrich Fund industry festival pass as one of 10 promising Canadian filmmakers in 2018. He has recently completed a residency at the Directors’ Lab at the Canadian Film Centre and holds an Honours degree from Ryerson University in Film Studies.

Alexandra Roberts specializes in creating ambitious and forward-thinking film, documentary, and episodic content. She cut her teeth in the industry on the first season of VICE’s Emmy-winning newsmagazine series for HBO, and since then her work has aired internationally on Al Jazeera English, VICELAND, Hulu, ARTE, and OUTtv, among others. She received her MA in Media Studies from the New School, a BA in Cultural Studies from McGill University, and is a 2018 alumni of the Producers’ Lab at the Canadian Film Centre.

Danny Sedore has produced countless short films, music videos, and branded content pieces. During his recent tenure as Program Manager at POV 3rdStreet, a media training program for youth from under represented communities, he has overseen production on a number of different short films that have gone on to play at several festivals around the world. He received his B.A in English Literature from The University of Toronto and in 2018 he completed his Producers’ Lab residency at the Canadian Film Centre.

Alyson Richards produced Don’t Talk to Irene starring newcomer Michelle McLeod and Oscar-winner Geena Davis. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won both the audience and jury awards at the Austin Film Festival. Other feature films she’s produced include Pat Mills’s dark comedy Guidance (TIFF, New York Times Critic Pick, Netflix) and the feature documentary Quality Balls (Hot Docs, Showtime, HBO Canada). She recently produced Docking, a 35 MM short epic from director Trevor Anderson that opened the Midnight Short program at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
